Professor G. Williamson (Bill) McDiarmid, who earned his doctorate from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, is Dean and Alumni Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he created several new programs: the Minor in Education; the Master’s for Experienced International Teachers; the combined BA/MAT; the Master of Educational Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship. He also helped create a university-district-union partnership to prepare math and science teachers for Seattle’s high-need middle schools, led the Carnegie-funded “Teachers for a New Era” project when he was in Teacher Education at the University of Washington in 2001.
Professor McDiarmid has received several awards, including a National Academy of Education Post-Doc Fellowship, the Outstanding Contribution to Interpretative Research Award and an Outstanding Research Award from the American Educational Research Association. He has co-authored three books and published several handbooks and other chapters, and numerous journal articles and research monographs. He also has extensive international educational experience in Greece, Pakistan, Thailand, and China.
